De 'Dutch' in Superdutch: Over de Nederlandse identiteit gekoppeld aan de architectenbureaus in het boek

Walvoort, Isa. "De 'Dutch' in Superdutch: Over de Nederlandse identiteit gekoppeld aan de architectenbureaus in het boek: Superdutch: New Architecture in the Netherlands (2000) van Bart Lootsma." Master's thesis, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2023.

Isa Walvoort’s thesis explores the construction of Dutch architectural identity through a critical analysis of Bart Lootsma’s influential book, Superdutch: New Architecture in the Netherlands (2000). The study seeks to define the "typically Dutch qualities" Lootsma attributed to the twelve featured firms—including OMA, MVRDV, and West 8—and investigates how this publication shaped the international discourse on Dutch architecture at the turn of the millennium. The research methodology combines literature reviews with an analysis of the socio-political context of the 1990s, including top-down government architecture policies and the role of the Architecture in the Netherlands yearbooks. Walvoort examines key themes identified by Lootsma, such as "aesthetic pragmatism," the use of computer technology, and a "second modernity" characterized by radical, iconic designs. The thesis also incorporates personal correspondence with Lootsma to better understand the author's intent and the book's international reception. The conclusion asserts that Superdutch was not documenting a self-conscious movement but rather served as a powerful branding exercise that grouped diverse architectural practices under one "brutal" and effective label. Walvoort finds that the book’s success was deeply rooted in the existing institutional infrastructure and a specific "bubble" of critics and policymakers. By analyzing the publication as a historical artifact, the thesis demonstrates how a single critical work can successfully define a national style and dominate the architectural narrative for decades
