This thesis examines the architecture and development of Centraal Wonen (Central Living), a collective housing movement that emerged in the Netherlands during the 1970s and 1980s. The research explores how this alternative woonvorm (housing form) sought to break through rigid housing regulations to provide an environment where residents shared facilities while maintaining independent living units. Van Drenth utilizes a case-study methodology, focusing on four pioneering projects, including De Wandelmeent (Hilversum) and De Meenthe (Tilburg). The research highlights the intense collaboration between architects and future residents, often involving democratic participation (inspraak) to determine the layout and "beukmaat" (bay size) of the buildings. Central to these designs is a spatial hierarchy ranging from private dwellings to shared "clusters" and public community spaces, embodying the philosophy of "a house as a coat and a street as a village". The study concludes that Centraal Wonen represents a unique building category where social ideals—such as community formation and shared domestic labor—take precedence over pure aesthetics. While some projects have faced challenges with maintenance or the dilution of their original collective spirit, the thesis argues they remain a vital part of Dutch architectural history. Ultimately, Van Drenth suggests that the lessons learned from these "moderate utopias" offer valuable insights for modern housing crises and the growing contemporary interest in collective living.
