Themes in Architecture, Cities, and Landscapes

This course introduces key ideas and current conversations about architecture, cities, and landscapes. Students explore some of today’s most pressing global challenges—such as diversity, climate change, digital transformation, environmental thinking, and decolonisation—and discuss how they shape the world around us. The course also shows how these issues connect to the wider fields of design and planning, and to the focus of our master’s programme.

After following this course, the aim is that you as a student, can:

  • Identify and define key topics, themes, and debates concerning the disciplines of architecture, cities, and landscapes.

  • Describe and summarise different perspectives and research foci presented in relevant scientific publications.

  • Interpret and apply the discussed themes to the analysis of spatial contexts, focusing on the history and heritage of (built) landscapes.

  • Analyse case studies through specific theoretical perspectives discussed in the course, distinguishing their relevance to varying spatial scales.

  • Evaluate the contribution of the discussed themes to existing scientific knowledge and academic discourse, while formulating a critical perspective.

  • Develop a preliminary thematic framework to guide their individual research trajectory within the master’s program.
